I swung through Lancaster on my way back from NYC last week to finish up an installation of three more Sign/Kits at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Family Inn, part of a group of businesses that my grandpa started and my uncles now run. They already had one LCD up and running on RedPost and wanted to add three more. They’re using their LCDs to advertise for local events and to promote their own specials for their properties. Their posters are simple, to the point, and visually appealing. I’ll post some in the next week or so as everything goes live. Until then, here are some photos of the three new displays:

As a child growing up in Pennsylvania, I attended Camp Hebron quite often. Situated in the mountains of PA north of Harrisburg, it’s a beautiful location with all the requisite attractions: mountains, big playing field for games, lake, swimming pool, cabins — and now RedPost. Check out these photos:

Their posters look awesome! (Some wire mold would help hide the cables.)

Also, on a side note, I worked for a website company in high school and designed an early version of Camp Hebron’s website (here’s the Internet archive version of it — check out that hot graphic design! I think there’s even an animated GIF). Funny how things come full circle.

Last night, on my way home from work, I took this photo. I’ve helpfully circled the kiosk where we have a RedPost installed:

Isaiah and I joined Dave Pottinger, who’s almost 80 and in much better shape than most 40yo’s, in rotating the kiosk so that the screen faces the street; before, it was facing the sidewalk. Elkhart County’s new regulations don’t effect this sign, either, as we’re in the city, although, I’m not sure what their definition of “flashing” is, as ours doesn’t “flash” it “flips” between images.

Anyways, as I was walking home this though struck me: by my very unofficial count, the city of Goshen has approximately one digital sign for every 1,523 people. This is possibly one of the highest per capita number of digital signs anywhere in the world. “Facts” like these are better left unproven.

I just overhead this conversation as three urban professional types, all sitting at laptops around a table eating lunch, noticed the RedPost/Sign by the door that we installed 2 weeks ago:

Woman: Wait, what’s that? It’s new isn’t it?

Man 1: Yeah, it’s this new thing they’re putting up, it has bus tracker on it (Man 1 gets up and goes over to the Sign, comes back and sits down)

Man 2: Cool, so it shows you when the bus is coming?

Man 1: Yeah, and it has other info on about local events and stuff.

Woman: (looking at the local Farmer’s Market poster) Wait, we have a farmer’s market? Where is that?

Man 2: Yeah, it’s over in the park.

Woman: Man, I need to get there.

With this anecdote submitted as evidence, yes, RedPost does work.

I spent my Saturday morning (finally) installing a RedPost/Box inside the building beside the kiosk located in Downtown Goshen — it had been installed outside and was not connected to the internet. We pulled a VGA cable through some conduit buried beneath the side walk and I just hadn’t been able to get everything hooked up until today. So now, the kiosk runs off this RedPost/Box, located inside the basement of the building right beside the kiosk:

Thanks Mike for letting us use your basement. Next step — creating the new Promote website that downtown businesses can use to upload ads to the kiosk.

I spent my morning at Courier’s Kendallville, Ind., book publishing plant, which they recently remodeled and expanded (they’re the largest employer in Kendallville, with Wal-Mart their only real competition). Pretty much at some time in your life you’ve bought or used a book or textbook printed by Courier. They’re huge.

As I mentioned, they remodeled their facility a year and a half ago and had the foresight to install a 28″ LG professional LCD in the lobby area to welcome guests, clients and vendors. However, until today, they didn’t have it hooked up to anything. Using a PIII Dell provided by Courier (an old desktop they shipped to RedPost), we installed Ubuntu and followed our own handy DIY instructions to customize it to run RedPost. Here’s the end result:

I’ll post more photos and some of their posters later. That’s Julie in the window.

They already have several other digital signs around campus running a different digital sign company’s software (gasp!). But they like RedPost, at least so far. Here are some pics:

The sign will be displaying video and information about Mechatronics Engineering Technology and the hands-on learning that takes place inside the lab. From Purdue Calumet’s Mechatronics web page:

This program prepares students to work as designers in the stable, exciting area of high speed packaging. A broad background in both electrical and mechanical areas along with internships will help you begin a great career designing, installing, and troubleshooting the complex equipment that produces and packages all of the items consumers purchase daily. The degree is also very valuable in the automotive and industrial areas as well. Graduates from this program are very mobile with career opportunities available nationwide.
