The Revolution: American Heartland Renaissance
On the excellent Digital Rules Blog at Forbes, Rich Karlgaard writes about the coming “American Heartland Renaissance.” A summary of his 4 points:
- When times get tough, talent moves away from high-paying finance jobs (which aren’t nearly as plentiful) towards startups.
- Small towns are cheap places to live…unlike Silicon Valley, NYC, Seattle, etc. which remain not-so-cheap even in a downturn.
- The flyover states are much better connected than before, due to the internet/broadband access/high-tech universities.
- Capital networks now exist that know how to fund heartland startups.
Rich’s points overlap a bit with a blog post I came across this past weekend written by Ben Casnocha (who apparently has already written the book I was thinking about writing some day) where he talks about the rise of “boutique cities.”
All-in-all, interesting times. Tons of opportunity. Ripe for revolution.
(I now have a revolution icon…I really have much better things to do than find revolution icons.)
