Mistakes in a pretty, pink bag
What a crazy week. Is it Friday yet? I leave Sat morning for San Francisco where I’ll be next week for the grand opening of The Bently Reserve. They’re installing some of the first of our new Signbeta‘s ever to be installed in the public.
How did they get these Signs if we’re not even shipping them yet? Let’s just say I have some connections within RedPost that made it happen. I’ll be blogging from the West Coast over the next week and hopefully doing so more than this week. Other than my Christmas ’07 hiatus, I’ve blogged less this week than any other…that’s how crazy it’s been.
Tomorrow, we’re launching the new Signs AND actually selling them. The first batch won’t ship until April 30, but you’ll be able to pre-order them. They look really, really sweet. Much, much, much better than the original Kit. Here’s the back of one of the new Signs (this one’s set up to flush-mount on the wall):

Some highlights (from the top left, clockwise):
- External USB ports! What a concept…much requested, much needed, now they’re here
- Access hatch: that’s right, you can get to all the ports on the motherboard simply by removing two screws. Security risk? Not with some hot glue…
- Security T-screw slot: this slot, while it’s supposed to be on the bottom, allows you to flush mount your Sign on the wall and secure it with a handy little tool and a T-screw so no one can run off with it
- Wifi antenna: if you are flush-mounting your Sign, you don’t want an unsightly antenna poking out the side. This is our solution — a slim, hidden-out-of-sight antenna that gets the job done.
- Upside-down logo: This is the mistake referenced in the title of this blog post. Somehow, the CAD file we sent to the plasma cutters got flipped around…and the top became the bottom and the bottom the top. Which is why you see a label “This Side Up” right above the upside-down logo. Whoops. The first 50 Signs will be this way…consider it a collector’s item.
You may also notice a lot of smudgy fingerprints. Turns out raw aluminum attracts fingerprints. But don’t worry, we give your Sign a nice cleaning before we ship it to you. AND we ship it in a pretty, pink bag:
