Why capitalism is so great
I just got back from a County Commissioner’s meeting where they were discussing a county-wide fiber network (essentially a special super-high-speed internet connecting businesses throughout the county).
This process started over 2 years ago — it’s been drug out, poorly managed, without clear leadership, through fits and starts, mainly, really really frustrating. And then County government stepped in about a year ago and took charge of the process, and I groaned, expecting nothing good to come of that.
So I went into the meeting tonight expecting to have to kick and complain and moan and yell.
To my surprise, the current plan (despite the process), is excellent. A private company, Gramtel, will wire up the county offices first and as part of that contract be required to build out Phase 2…at Gramtel’s expense. It should all be done within a year. It will directly benefit businesses. It doesn’t lock anyone into one vendor. Overall, really really good for Elkhart County and the growth of RedPost.
So how did this happen? My take on it — Gramtel and the IT consultants the county hired actually know what they’re doing. How refreshing!
