RedPost/GreenRoof Prototype

IMG_0003I meant to post this last week but just now got around to it…last week, I finished planting the green roof prototype I’ve been tinkering with, following these instructions. Ideally, if the planting mixture I used works well, we’ll put a bunch of these all over the roof next spring to keep from having to install A/C…that’s the plan at least.

I used a 1:1:6 mixture of peat moss, sand, and haydite (provided by to the Hydraulic Brick Press Company — thanks guys!), with a handful of lime and fertilizer. So far, the plants seem happy and healthy and haven’t been complaining. But will they survive the harsh Indiana winter? Only time will tell.

There are a couple photos up on Flickr.

  • I planted a couple kinds of sedum and sempervivum (hen and chicks).

Fantastic! What mentoring to the community! Make sure you tell the important people in the community - roofers and contractors!

Looks like sedum -- what types of plants did you use?
