The RedPost System
I should say a little more about how the RedPost system works, and how it will be a lot cheaper than existing digital signage options (see Why I’m doing this for some numbers).
For starters, we’re not (at least initially) pushing video content to our signs. That means existing, even low-bandwidth, wired or wireless networks will work fine for delivering content. It also means we can use older, time-tested, reliable electronics because we don’t need as much processing power.
Second, we’re using open source software–namely DSL, which stands for Damn Small Linux, Mozilla for content delivery, and on the server side, PHP/MySQL/Apache. This means we’re not paying any software licensing fees to anyone. And philosophically, Open Source is a better way of developing software for this sort of content delivery platform. Because ultimately, it’s all about the software–hardware is just a commodity, and should (and will be) standardized.
